Q: How does KPS affect chemotherapy dose intensity?

KPS <70 → higher toxicity risk, may require dose reduction or growth factor support. Most trials use KPS ≥70 as inclusion criterion.

Q: Is there a validated self-reported version of KPS?

The patient-reported ECOG correlates well with physician-rated ECOG in many studies. The validated PRO-ECOG is an alternative.

Question 1

What is the difference between KPS and ECOG performance status?

Accepted Answer

KPS provides 11 levels vs ECOG's 6. ECOG is simpler and standard for clinical trial eligibility. Many oncologists use KPS in radiation oncology and ECOG in medical oncology.

Question 2

Can KPS change over the course of treatment?

Accepted Answer

Yes — reassess at each encounter. Improvement after initial therapy is favourable. Decline despite treatment should prompt re-evaluation of the treatment plan.

Question 4

Is there a validated self-reported version of KPS?
